After five years of dedicated study with Naka Akira sensei, Odys was endorsed to teach basic Nakastyle in 2022. As part of the Nakastyle Study Group of DMV, we offer a dedicated educational curriculum from the ground up to develop hard skills (technique) and soft skills (communication, session progression, “the why”) in traditional Japanese Kinbaku with a focus on Nakastyle semenawa.

WORKSHOPS

We are pleased to announce a series of three workshops focused on learning Naka Style rope bondage. These workshops are meant to be taken in order, as one builds on the other, starting from complete beginner to full suspensions. They will be held at various locations.

The Prep Workshop

The Prep Workshop will focus is on fundamental tying techniques. In particular, the participants would gain knowledge and skills in:

  • rope safety;
  • Japanese style rope terminology;
  • rope flow/handling/tension;
  • square/granny/half-hitch knots;
  • mixed directional knots, x friction, and reverse tension;
  • simple loop tie;

  • single column tie

Day 2 builds on the skills learned in the Day 1 to gain knowledge in:

The Gote Essentials Workshop

The Gote Essentials workshop is devoted to studying the most fundamental tie in the Japanese rope bondage style: hands tied behind the back. We will also study other building blocks for Naka style shibari and introduce the concept of semenawa progressive experience with a few basic floor and partial suspension ties. We will teach the secrets for a sustainable iconic 2-rope Nakastyle TK/Gote: shoulder lock, placement, and tension.

Due to the small size of the workshop, we will have the opportunity to work with each couple on adapting the gote to their bottom’s body. Building on techniques we have covered in the Prep 1 and 2 workshops, participants will gain knowledge and skills in:

  • first/second/third rope of the gote
  • unique aspects of tying Naka style gote (flow/progression)
  • futomomo
  • calf & thigh binders
  • Naka hip-line
  • full/half monoblock (booty basket)
  • safety considerations for gote and partial suspensions
  • body mechanics (shoulder lock, arms/hands placement)
  • rope intention and communication for both partners
  • semenawa experience for Naka style kinbaku

The Kata Workshop

Kata Day 1

The 1st day will start with the review of the two-rope Naka style gote.

  • M-shape
  • S-shape
  • Kata-ashi (with addition of Naka style third gote rope)

PERFORMANCES/SEMENAWA RESEARCH MEETINGS (SRM)

Performances

Semenawa Research Meetings (SRM)

The word “semenawa” has been tossed around in the rope bondage community with various expressions such as “being tied in semenewa”, “semenawa style”, “semenawa ties”, etc. The primary goal of SRMs is to uncover the meaning of semenawa by discussing how this tying style is not about rope technique or pattern, but rather about the intentional mutual journey that both partners embark upon as they tie. Every meeting would be focused on specific topic, the discussion about these topics would be typically followed by two tying demos that would emphasize the individual nature of a semenawa experience. We aim to have monthly SRMs.

The unique and intimate nature of this meeting would allow participants to discuss, observe and ask questions throughout the meeting, as well as taking photos from various vantage points during tying demos. Upon the completion of the demo sessions, the attendees may share their photos to be discussed and gain additional insights into dynamism and aesthetic of Nakastyle semenawa.
